I'm Sofia Romano. I'm taking you through the Berlin of the Golden Twenties: variety shows, ballrooms and nightlife in Mitte. Our starting point is Hackescher Markt, where taverns and banqueting halls already stood side by side around 1900. From there, the route leads on to further stations that show what happens when a place stops playing it safe. Along the way you'll stand in Clärchens Ballhaus, where people have been dancing since 1913. You'll visit a stage where Brecht and Weill turned theatre into a weapon in 1928, and a former ice palace on Friedrichstraße that became a revue stage. At the end waits an opera house that Frederick the Great had built as the first building of his Forum Fridericianum. This tour tells of places, of who shaped them, and of why it mattered. Around three kilometres, five stations, about 124 minutes, an easy walk. You'll leave with the names of artists, and with the route itself as a map of what was possible here.
