The Dutch Golden Age: Merchants, Canals and the World's First Joint-Stock Company

I'm Prof. Julian Sato, and we're about to begin an exploration of the networks that made Amsterdam the financial center of the world. Over the next two hours and forty minutes, we'll move through seven stops across the city, walking the routes merchants used to move goods for centuries. We'll begin at the Rijksmuseum, where the collections inside document Amsterdam's merchant networks and how their wealth became the foundation for cultural patronage. From there, we'll descend into the Grachtengordel, the concentric canal rings engineered with mathematical precision to move goods and people, and stand in Dam Square, founded around 1270 when a dam was built across the Amstel River, and by the Golden Age the very place where civic authority and merchant power converged. We'll then turn to Beursplein and the mechanism that enabled global capital accumulation: the joint-stock company, which allowed ordinary citizens to own shares in ventures that reshaped the world. This is a moderately paced walking tour with substantial audio content at each stop. Expect to engage deeply with how architecture and urban design encoded the historical mechanisms that built a global commercial power.
